Nicholas Lyndhurst’s son Archie tragically passed away at the age of 19 after a brief illness in 2020. The young teenager was discovered dead at his family residence in west London on September 22. Although his death was considered unexplained, it was not deemed suspicious.
It wasn’t until four months later that the cause of Archie’s death was confirmed. He had suffered a brain haemorrhage caused by a form of leukaemia. In January 2021, after the inquest into Archie’s death was dropped, Lucy, Nicholas’s wife, took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news and provide an explanation.
Lucy revealed, “He died from an Intracerebral Haemorrhage caused by Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma/Leukaemia. This is not Leukaemia as we know it, the word Acute in medical terms means rapid. He assured us that there wasn’t anything anyone could have done as Archie showed no signs of illness. Archie had numerous bleeds on the brain and the Dr went to great lengths to reassure us that he wouldn’t have been in any pain as it happened in his sleep. The results utterly floored us to think something like this could happen. It’s very rare and around only 800 people a year die from it.”
Archie had a promising acting career ahead of him, following in his father’s footsteps. He had achieved success with his role in the popular CBBC show, So Awkward, and had even formed a romantic relationship with his co-star Nethra Tilakumara.
In her Instagram post, Lucy shared that Archie had spent his last days with the love of his life, celebrating his 20th birthday in advance. She expressed, “Only days before [his death] he’d been with the love of his life Nethra celebrating his birthday early as she was due to go away with work commitments. Life is fragile, precious, and sometimes incredibly cruel.”
Lucy also reflected on one of her final conversations with Archie, where he spoke about the importance of love in the world. She recalled, “He looked at me with his huge blue soulful eyes, shook his head, and said, ‘All the world needs is love mama, it’s so easy to love’.”
One year after Archie’s passing, his girlfriend Nethra paid tribute to him on what would have been their second anniversary. She shared a heartfelt message alongside a collection of photographs, expressing her deep love and gratitude for having known him.
Archie’s tragic death had a devastating impact on his family, leaving Nicholas heartbroken. One person who has been there for Nicholas during this difficult time is his co-star from Only Fools and Horses, David Jason.
Despite no longer sharing the screen, David and Nick have remained incredibly close. As soon as David learned about Archie’s tragedy, he reached out to Nick to offer his support. Since then, they have been in regular contact, with David doing everything he can to be there for his grieving friend.
In the midst of this heartbreak, Nicholas is grateful for the support he has received from David and everyone else who cares about him and his family. Their love and support mean the world to him during this challenging period.
