In a trial that captured public attention, a horrifying video was shown that shows the moment police discovered the body of a dead baby, hidden among garbage inside a Lidl supermarket bag. The case involves 36-year-old Constance Marten and her partner, 49-year-old Mark Gordon, who refused to reveal the whereabouts of their daughter Victoria when they were located in Brighton in February 2023.

The baby’s body was found on March 1, 2023, in an abandoned shed on a plot of land near where the couple was arrested. Both Marten and Gordon watched the video in Old Bailey court, which shows the officers investigating the supermarket bag left outside the shed. As they removed the garbage, they revealed the lifeless body of the baby, whose image was obscured in the video.
Pc Allen Ralph, who was present at the scene, recalled, “Either something was dead inside or something had died.” He described the moment of discovery, mentioning the unexpected weight of the bag and the amount of garbage it contained.

After the couple’s car caught fire on a highway near Bolton, they fled with the newborn on January 5, living off the grid in the South Downs for seven weeks. They were captured on CCTV footage rummaging through trash bins outside the Hollingbury Golf Club in Brighton on February 20 of last year and were arrested on February 27 on suspicion of child neglect.
During police interrogation, Marten appeared disheveled and refused to answer questions about the whereabouts of her daughter, while Gordon complained of pain and demanded respect, despite the police’s concerns focusing on the baby.
The trial at Old Bailey continues, revealing the dark details and actions of the couple before and after the tragic death of little Victoria.
