Bill Bailey Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Sean Lock on His 61st Birthday

Comedian Bill Bailey has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend Sean Lock on what would have been his 61st birthday. Lock, who tragically passed away from cancer at the age of 58 on August 18, 2021, was remembered by Bailey in a touching post on X. Alongside a selfie of the pair walking along a sunny beach, Bill wrote, “Today would have been Sean’s 61st birthday. Miss you, old pal.”

The photo shared by Bailey showcases the close bond between the two friends, with Lock staying in touch even after Bailey’s lung cancer diagnosis. Fans of Bill, who has a massive following of 3.3 million on X, flooded the comments section with warm messages and fond memories of Sean. One fan expressed, “Such a great talent. Gone far too early. He had me in stitches.” Another added, “Still struggle to get my head around the fact he is not here anymore! The world misses you, Sean!”

Bill Bailey’s official profile photo on X is also a picture of him and Sean, highlighting the significance of their friendship. Following Lock’s passing in August 2021, Bailey delivered a moving speech during a Stand Up To Cancer comedy special, where he described Sean as “utterly original” and “a man of boundless creativity.”

Sean Lock rose to fame in 1993 through his appearance on a TV show alongside Rob Newman and David Baddiel. He later received the prestigious Best Live Comic award at the 2000 British Comedy Awards. Lock’s friendship with Bailey began when he started writing and script-editing for Bailey’s TV series. He then joined the popular show 8 Out of 10 Cats in 2005 and remained a part of it for 18 seasons.

In a remarkable display of support, Bill Bailey participated in a charity walking event one year after Sean’s passing. Alongside fellow comedian Lee Mack, he managed to raise over £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

During an interview with young grief charity Winston’s Wish, Bailey candidly discussed his ongoing bereavement and the moments when he forgets that Sean is no longer with us, even after more than two years. He shared, “The nature of grief means that there are those moments that just keep happening. Those triggers – you never know when they’re going to arrive, and you never know from what source they’ll come or what the catalyst will be. They can sometimes just ambush you.” Bill also revealed that he often finds himself wanting to text Sean when he comes across something funny or meaningful, only to remember that he is no longer able to.
