Woman Falls for Clay iPhone Scam, Loses £2000

A woman in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was left dumbfounded after purchasing two iPhones online, only to discover that they were made of clay. The 36-year-old businesswoman came across the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s for sale on a social media marketplace and decided to meet the seller in person to complete the transaction. Feeling confident in the seller’s trustworthiness due to his online presence, she visited his home with her husband.

However, things took a dark turn when she attempted to open the iPhone boxes and examine the contents. The seller, who had been friendly until that point, suddenly threatened her with a gun, warning her not to open the boxes. Fearing for her safety, the woman complied and transferred him £2000 as he demanded. The seller then swiftly left the scene in his car.

After the seller’s departure, the woman and her husband opened the boxes, only to find that they contained fake clay iPhones. Realizing they had been duped, the woman immediately contacted the police and her bank in an attempt to cancel the transaction. Sadly, her efforts were in vain as the money had already been withdrawn from her account.

Fortunately, there was a glimmer of hope for the woman when she learned that the suspect had been apprehended by the police. The 31-year-old perpetrator, who is apparently an influencer with a substantial social media following, was arrested in Belo Horizonte on charges of extortion aggravated by the use of a firearm.

The woman expressed her shock and disbelief at the level of creativity involved in the crime. The iPhone boxes appeared brand new and sealed, leaving her and her husband completely taken aback. Despite the traumatic experience, she hopes that justice will be served and that others will be cautious when making online purchases.
