Award-winning actress Brenda Blethyn is set to bid farewell to her iconic role as Vera after two special episodes air next year on ITV. However, rumors of a prequel to the hit crime drama are already circulating, leaving fans eager for more.

During a recent appearance on BBC Breakfast, Ibinabo Jack, who plays DC Jacqueline Williams on Vera, discussed the future of the show. She described Brenda as a “formidable actress” and expressed her sadness at the thought of the series coming to an end. When asked if Vera would continue without Brenda, Ibinabo responded, “Brenda is Vera, so unless they did a prequel, like early days…”

The idea of a prequel seemed to excite both the presenters, Jon Kay and Sally Nugent. Could we see a series exploring Vera’s early life in the future? With a dedicated fanbase, it’s clear that viewers would miss seeing DCI Stanhope solving cases on their screens.

Graeme Thompson, the chair of The Royal Television Society, also joined the discussion and highlighted how Vera has been a “springboard” for many actors and directors since its debut in 2010. He mentioned David Leon, who returned to the show as a director after leaving as an actor. The series has not only provided opportunities for talent in the northeast of England but has also boosted tourism in the region.

With Brenda’s incredible commitment to the role, having appeared in every scene of the 53 episodes, the show has truly been a showcase for her talent. As fans eagerly await the final two episodes next year, they can catch up on previous Vera episodes on ITVX. And for those who don’t want to miss a beat, BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One from 6am.
