Over the years, these shows have introduced memorable lesbian characters and relationships that have paved the way for LGBTQ+ representation in the media. While progress has been made, there is still room for improvement, as soap operas have yet to showcase a successful same-sex wedding and often fall into the harmful ‘bury your gays’ trope.

One of the most iconic moments in soap history occurred in 1994 on Brookside, when Beth Jordache and Margaret Clemence shared television’s first pre-watershed lesbian kiss. This groundbreaking scene was watched by millions and even featured in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, reaching audiences in countries where same-sex relationships were still illegal.

Unfortunately, their love didn’t last, as Zoe chose to leave Emma for Susie Wilde.
