Richard E Grant Surprises Fans with Emigration Story

In a stunning throwback photo, Richard E Grant recently shared a glimpse into his life over 40 years ago when he moved to London. The 66-year-old Saltburn star looked absolutely adorable in a photo from 1982, wearing a bobbly jumper and a red scarf as he prepared to embark on his journey to the UK. Grant explained that he emigrated from Swaziland (now the Kingdom of Eswatini) exactly 42 years ago. Despite his humble beginnings, the actor managed to make his way to the big screen by working as a waiter and living in a small bedsit with just a single suitcase.

Grant expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he found in London, stating, “Like Dick Whittington, I found my fortune in London. 🎶SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS🎶 truly came true!” His post garnered attention from A-list fans and fellow actors, with Joely Richardson and Alan Carr commenting on his remarkable journey. Fans were also inspired by Grant’s story, expressing their admiration and surprise at his early struggles in the industry. Some were particularly shocked by the affordable rent of £30 a week in Notting Hill, a far cry from the current average cost of £732 per week. Despite the challenges, Grant’s determination and talent eventually led him to great success, including his iconic role in the 1987 film Withnail and I.

Richard E Grant continues to captivate audiences with his performances, most recently appearing in the 2021 film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. His story serves as a reminder that dreams can come true with hard work and perseverance.

RICHARD GAINS DUAL CITIZENSHIP IN UK AND ESWATINI

Richard, the renowned actor, has become a citizen of both the UK and Eswatini. He rose to fame in 1987 with his role in the film Withnail and I, and has since become a beloved figure in television and film. Some of his notable works include The Lesson, Jack and Sarah, Gosford Park, and The Little Vampire.

In 2019, Richard received an Academy Award nomination for his outstanding performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Unfortunately, he lost out to Mahershala Ali from Green Book. Despite residing in the UK for many years, Richard draws inspiration from his childhood memories in Swaziland, which greatly influence his artistic endeavors. In 2005, he wrote and directed the comedy film Wah Wah, which was based on his experiences growing up in Swaziland. Additionally, he authored a book titled A Pocketful of Happiness, which delves into his life journey.

Richard spent his formative years in Mbabane alongside his younger brother Stuart, who currently resides in Johannesburg. As he grew older, Richard developed a close bond with his mother, who sadly passed away last year. However, his relationship with his parents was tumultuous, as they divorced after he witnessed his mother engaging in an affair.

Tragically, Richard’s wife, Joan Washington, a Scottish dialect coach, lost her battle with lung cancer in 2022. She leaves behind her son Tom and her daughter Olivia, who both continue to live in the UK.
