NETFLIX FANS CRAVE MORE: WILL AMAZON’S A VERY ROYAL SCANDAL FLOP?

In a battle of the streaming giants, Netflix’s hit series Scoop, featuring Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, has left viewers hungry for more. However, fans will have to wait until October for Amazon’s A Very Royal Scandal to hit their screens. This five-month delay has sparked fears that the show may not live up to its predecessor and could potentially “flop.”

According to an exclusive report in The Sun, Amazon is now in crisis talks over the situation. The streaming platform invested a significant amount of money in the production and is genuinely concerned that viewers will think, “We’ve already seen this,” leading to a disappointing reception. It seems that Netflix has already won the battle in the eyes of Amazon.

Both Scoop and A Very Royal Scandal revolve around the same subject matter – Prince Andrew’s infamous interview on Newsnight with Emily Maitlis. The interview aimed to deny the allegations of sexual abuse made against him by Virginia Guiffre, an American citizen who claimed to have met the Prince when she was just 17. Prince Andrew vehemently denies these allegations.

However, the scrutiny surrounding Prince Andrew’s ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein caused embarrassment for the Royal Family. After his disastrous Newsnight appearance in 2019, which many labeled a “PR disaster,” the Duke of York stepped down from his royal duties.

Prince Andrew later reached a settlement with Virginia, estimated to be around £3 million, which included a donation to her charity supporting victims of sexual abuse and trafficking. While he maintains his innocence, he expressed regret for his association with Epstein.

Scoop has already garnered critical acclaim for its portrayal of these events, particularly for its depiction of Emily Maitlis as the interviewer. However, there are concerns that A Very Royal Scandal may struggle to match the high standards set by its predecessor.

In the midst of these worries, early preview photos of Michael Sheen in his role as Prince Andrew have faced criticism due to his lack of resemblance to the royal figure. In contrast, Rufus Sewell dedicated four hours a day to the makeup department during filming for Scoop, completely transforming into the Prince.

As anticipation builds for A Very Royal Scandal, only time will tell if it can deliver the same level of entertainment that Scoop has achieved. Will Amazon be able to overcome the challenges posed by the delayed release and live up to the expectations of eager viewers? Stay tuned to find out.
