Home Under The Hammer’s Martel Maxwell revealed the challenges of renovating an “uninhabitable” flat on Thursday’s episode of the popular show. Alongside host Martin Roberts, they explored several properties, including a small flat in Edinburgh’s Haymarket, a three-bedroom terrace in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, and a grand detached house with an annexe and walled garden in Carlisle. All of these properties were purchased at auction, and the presenters caught up with the buyers to learn about their plans for the homes.

The first property featured on the show was a one-bedroom apartment that was deemed “uninhabitable.” Property developer Amir purchased it for £117,000 at auction. Although the apartment was in a state of disrepair, it did have a brand-new boiler and freshly plastered walls. Martel highlighted its convenient location, stating that it was within walking distance of Haymarket and Waverley stations, as well as the amenities of the West End.

However, Martel also pointed out the challenges that come with purchasing an unfinished home. The apartment lacked a working bathroom and kitchen, which could make it difficult to secure a mortgage. Cash buyers may be the only viable option for potential owners. Despite these obstacles, Martel emphasized the potential of the property as a blank canvas for buyers to create their dream home.

Eight weeks later, Martel and the Homes Under The Hammer team revisited the renovated property to see the transformation. The once run-down flat had been completely made over, now appearing clean and inviting. Amir had added an open-plan kitchen, fully equipped with accessories to create a homely and positive atmosphere. An expert valuer estimated that the flat could achieve a price range of £165,000 to £170,000.
