According to Dornan, the pressure of dating someone as famous as Knightley became too much for him to handle. “There is a big pressure when you go out with someone like Keira,” he confessed. “You can feel a bit second-rate and that’s what started to happen. It’s not like I was bringing the bread to the table – and that can start to affect everything. Keira could see what I was going through and it would have been better if I’d kept it hidden from her.”
But that’s not all. Dornan also made a controversial comment about gender roles in relationships, suggesting that he felt emasculated by Knightley’s success. “The man is meant to be the Alpha in the relationship on the money and power front and clearly I was not,” he said. “You feel you have to be dominant in other areas and that leads to problems.”
Despite their tumultuous past, both Dornan and Knightley have moved on and found happiness in their personal lives. Knightley tied the knot with James Righton in 2013 after two years of dating, while Dornan married Amelia Warner after three years together.
