GRAND DESIGNS PRESENTER GIVES UPDATE ON “SADDEST EVER HOME”

In a recent update, Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud shared news about one of the most heartbreaking homes he has encountered. Edward Short, who appeared on the Channel 4 show in 2019, had big plans to transform his parents’ 1950s house. However, things did not go as planned.

During the Grand Designs Live event at London ExCeL, Kevin provided an emotional update on Edward’s wellbeing. Viewers were introduced to Edward, a music industry executive with a vision to create something extraordinary with Chesil Cliff House.

Unfortunately, Edward’s dreams were shattered when he failed to complete the renovation within the expected 18-month timeframe. As the show progressed, it was revealed that Edward had been working on the transformation for over a decade.

Kevin expressed his concerns for Edward’s wellbeing and that of his family. He also acknowledged the challenges faced during the renovation process. The house remained unfinished, and water damage cost Edward tens of thousands of pounds to fix. The building was not fully watertight, which was a significant setback.

However, there is a silver lining to this story. Kevin mentioned that despite the obstacles, Edward eventually completed the lighthouse-style home in 2022. The property was then put on the market for a staggering £10 million. Unfortunately, in January, it was revealed that the price had been reduced to £5.25 million on Savills.

The mansion boasts an impressive eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and six reception rooms. Fans of the Channel 4 show who watched the episode in 2019 had mixed opinions about the project. Some referred to the lighthouse mansion as an “eyesore” and criticized the ambitious scale of the undertaking.

During an interview with Devon Live, Edward reflected on his experience, stating that living in the old house had been amazing. He mentioned the joy his family found in spending time by the sea, engaging in activities like kayaking. However, he also acknowledged the strain the project had put on his wife, Hazel, and expressed regret for the impact it had on their family.

At the Grand Designs Live event, Kevin unveiled The Grand House, a groundbreaking project that showcases cutting-edge products and designs for your own grand design. If you would like to receive news notifications from Daily Express, sign up now.
