Hickman, born in Hollywood in 1931, began his career in the entertainment industry at a young age. He signed a contract with Paramount and made his film debut in The Prisoner of Zenda in 1937. His breakthrough role came a few years later when he portrayed Winfield Joad in the critically acclaimed movie Grapes of Wrath. The film, based on a novel of the same name, received seven Oscar nominations and won two, including Best Director and Best Supporting Actress. It is still regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and features stars like Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell.
