BLACKADDER COULD BE MAKING A COMEBACK AFTER 25 YEARS!

Fans of the classic sitcom Blackadder may have something to celebrate soon. Writer Ben Elton has revealed that he wants to bring back the beloved show. Originally running from 1983 to 1989, the series consisted of four seasons and a few special episodes, with the last one airing in 1999.

Starring Rowan Atkinson as Edmund Blackadder and Tony Robinson as Baldrick, each season took place in a different historical period and also featured Stephen Fry, Tim McInnerny, and Hugh Laurie. The first season, called The Black Adder, was written by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson, while subsequent seasons were written by Curtis and Elton.

Elton expressed his desire to give fans what they want and continue the story. However, instead of bringing it back to television, he is considering the possibility of a stage adaptation. This follows the success of other sitcoms like Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers being adapted for the stage.

In an interview with The Sun, Elton said, “A Blackadder play, if Richard was keen on it, I’d be interested. Not an adaptation of episodes, it would be an original play. When I wrote Upstart Crow, I did three series and three Christmas specials for TV, which was a load of writing, but I’m proud of the fact I then did an original play. If we were to do that with Adder it would be the same.”

Although Elton admitted that he’s unsure if it will ever happen, he remains open to the idea of the original cast returning. “If they want to be in it, that’s up to them,” he said.

Elton, who went on to write other successful shows after Blackadder, such as The Beautiful Game, We Will Rock You Tonight’s the Night, and Love Never Dies (the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera), acknowledged that bringing the show back makes him nervous. “There were a couple of efforts to do a bit of Adder, with mixed results, and I’m very clear in my mind we do not want to mess up something as beloved as Blackadder by going back to it,” he added.

Tony Robinson, who played Baldrick, previously shared his thoughts on the original script, saying, “I got the script and thought it was great because I would be with these people (creators Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson), but as for the script itself, I thought it was a little bit rubbish. I think everybody knew that and they hadn’t got it to where they wanted it to be, and that is why you made pilots in those days… it was experimental and a petri dish to encourage you to take risks.”
