BBC executives have assured the public that Sam Smith’s upcoming performance at the Proms on August 2 will be suitable for all audiences, despite previous concerns about their controversial show at the BRIT Awards last year. The non-binary singer, who prefers to be referred to using they/them pronouns, has become known for their provocative choreography and unconventional costumes, including a red latex outfit with devil horns.

Many have questioned whether Smith’s summer show will be appropriate for families, but Radio 3 director Sam Jackson has clarified that there is no need to worry. In a statement, he stated that the performance will be entirely fitting for the Proms and the audience in attendance. The focus will be on Smith’s music and the unique orchestral arrangement, making it a must-see event as it will be their only UK performance this year.

Jackson further emphasized that the Proms is a distinct event from Smith’s previous BRIT Awards performance. Last year, their rendition of the song ‘Unholy’ raised concerns due to their leather fetish outfit and top hat adorned with devil horns. Additionally, their inflatable latex jumpsuit with oversized legs caused quite a stir on the red carpet. However, the Proms are traditionally associated with classical performances, and Smith’s show will be no exception. They will be offering a classical interpretation of their award-winning 2014 album, In The Lonely Hour, which featured more conventional love songs.

Other notable artists, such as Florence Welch from Florence and The Machine, will also grace the stage at the Proms. This season of music will begin on July 19 and conclude with the final night at the Royal Albert Hall on September 14. The closing performance will include traditional and patriotic songs like “Rule, Britannia!” and “Land of Hope and Glory.”

Piers Morgan, a well-known critic, expressed his disapproval of Sam Smith’s performance at the BRIT Awards. He described their behavior as “narcissistic, self-indulgent, and deliberately shocking.” During his TalkTV show, Morgan commented on Smith’s appearance, stating, “He looks terrible! Why would you do this?” In response, his guest James Barr argued that other artists, such as Ozzy Osbourne, have engaged in vulgar acts on stage. However, Morgan vehemently disagreed, claiming that Osbourne never stooped to Smith’s level.
