In a stunning revelation on a recent episode of the beloved BBC series, Antiques Roadshow, expert Will Farmer left two guests speechless with the jaw-dropping value of their £1 stag model. The incredible moment took place at the prestigious Ulster Folk Museum, where the couple presented their 19th-century treasure to the knowledgeable William.
As Will examined the antique with a keen eye, he couldn’t help but express his curiosity. “This wonderful model of a stag just lying there, so at ease…Tell me, where did he come from in your life?” he inquired, eager to learn more about the origins of this remarkable piece.
The couple shared their story, recounting how they stumbled upon the model two decades ago at a car boot sale. “I bought it about 20 years ago for £1,” the guest revealed, leaving Will stunned. “For a pound?” he clarified, astonished by the incredible bargain. “I just liked him and thought he was a great find,” the guest added.
Examining the majestic golden stag, sculpted to exude tranquility, William proceeded to educate the couple on its history. “What we have here is an Austrian, coal-painted bronze figure, dating back to around 1900. In Vienna and Austria at the time, there were 50 different manufacturers,” he explained. “But one name stands out above the rest: Bergmann. Judging by the quality of this piece, I’m confident in saying that this is a Bergmann.”
Will couldn’t help but admire the exquisite craftsmanship of the stag, noting its attention to detail. “He is so beautifully modeled, with a slight bend in his antlers, perhaps from a battle. But he remains intact and is a truly sensitive portrayal of a stag. Simply lovely,” he remarked, taking a moment to appreciate the artwork.
With the tension building, the guests anxiously awaited the valuation. Will finally broke the silence, asking, “So, one pound? Do you think there might be a small profit?” The guest replied optimistically, “I hope so.” And then, the moment of truth arrived as Will revealed the staggering price of the stag. “Well, I can tell you that your one-pound purchase today is worth £500 to £600,” he declared.
