Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, experienced an awkward moment during a live interview on Good Morning Britain. Host Susanna Reid wished her a happy birthday, revealing that she was turning 44. Angela laughed uncomfortably and commented, “You didn’t have to say the age.”

Susanna didn’t see any issue with mentioning the age and responded, “I’m nearly 54. I think ageing is a blessing, Angela Rayner. Ageing is a blessing.”

However, the pleasantries quickly ended as Susanna and co-host Richard Madeley delved into a discussion about the profit Angela made from selling her council house without paying Capital Gains Tax. Susanna expressed her concern, stating, “When leaders don’t adhere to the rules, it undermines voter confidence in them.”

Susanna questioned Angela about the £48,000 profit she made and the absence of Capital Gains Tax payment. Angela defended herself, explaining that the house was her primary residence, where she paid rent and was registered on the electoral roll.

Angela further clarified, “Sometimes I spent time at my husband’s house because he had the children a couple of days a week. So, my living arrangements at the time were perfectly normal. I’m confident that I haven’t done anything wrong.”

Susanna acknowledged that these questions might feel intrusive, but emphasized that married couples can only have one permanent home between them. Therefore, tax-related inquiries arise when it comes to living arrangements.

Angela maintained her stance, stating, “I’ve answered all of the questions, Susanna. I’ve been very clear.” She also mentioned that she had sought expert tax advice and would welcome questions from HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs).

Good Morning Britain airs on ITV weekdays at 6am.
