DOZENS OF AREAS IN UK AT RISK OF FLOODING AS HEAVY RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS HIT BRITAIN

The UK is bracing for flooding as heavy rain and thunderstorms sweep across the country. The Met Office has issued yellow and amber warnings for rain and thunderstorm, covering most of the British Isles. While those in the west of Scotland, south of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland may escape the dreary weather, others should prepare for drenching rain on Wednesday and Thursday, with the likelihood of flooding in some areas. London, southeast and southwest England, east and northeast, and the Midlands have been issued with amber and red flood alerts.

FOUR AREAS IN UK AT HIGH RISK OF FLOODING

After the recent wet weather, several places in the UK are at risk of flooding, with river and groundwater levels rising. The Environment Agency has issued four red flood warnings and 61 flood alerts. Flooding is expected at River Dene in Walton, Warwickshire; the Stour Brook from Haverhill, Essex, to Sturmer in Suffolk; Gilwiskaw Brook in Packington; and River Mease in Measham and Netherseal.

RED FLOOD WARNINGS AND AMBER FLOOD ALERTS

If you are in an area with a red flood warning, it is advised to “act now.” Flooding is also possible in 50 other areas, including parts of southeast London, east Kent, Derbyshire, Leicester, and Nottinghamshire. An amber flood alert means to “be prepared” for possible flooding.

FLOOD WARNINGS TO REMAIN IN PLACE

The flood warnings will continue until the situation changes, according to the government agency. The Walton Area, including Walton Road in Warwickshire, is expected to be heavily affected on Wednesday. People are advised to avoid low lying footpaths and bridges near watercourses, while drivers should steer clear of flooded low lying roads near rivers.

In Haverhill and Sturmer, the areas most at risk are riverside properties and the A1307 and A143. The Environment Agency has issued a warning, stating that heavy rainfall is expected today, putting residents at risk. They are closely monitoring the situation as further rainfall is forecast.

Londoners sought shelter from the downpour as heavy rain continues to pour. The UK is bracing for widespread flooding and travel disruptions due to the persistent rain. Residents in high-risk areas are advised to sign up for flood warnings and alerts. Additionally, it is recommended to create a flood plan, which includes measures to prevent water from entering homes, knowing how to turn off utilities, and keeping important documents in waterproof containers.

Preparing for a flood also involves taking note of relatives who may require assistance in an emergency. It is important to have contact details for insurance, utilities, finance, vets, the council, and medical services readily available. A flood kit should be prepared with essential items such as documents, warm and waterproof clothing, a flashlight, drinking water, medication, a charged mobile phone, and baby care items. Travelers are advised to check road conditions and train timetables before embarking on their journeys.

According to meteorologist Alex Burkill from the Met Office, heavy and persistent rain is expected in various areas throughout the week. The exact locations of the heaviest rainfall and the areas most likely to be affected remain uncertain.
