Romesh Ranganathan, the popular comedian, has strongly criticized the controversial anti-gay laws that were implemented in Uganda last year. In an exclusive clip from his new BBC series, The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan, the 46-year-old comedian expresses his shock and dismay at the situation in Uganda. Ranganathan is embarking on a travel series in Africa, visiting three destinations that are not traditionally tourist-friendly. However, his first stop in Uganda leaves him disturbed by what he discovers.

Before his visit, Ranganathan’s knowledge of Uganda was limited to the brutal military dictatorship of Idi Amin in the 1970s. However, his guide was eager to show him that there is much more to the country than its dark past. During his time in Uganda, Ranganathan goes white water rafting on the Nile, spots wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and even tries banana gin. But his experience is overshadowed by the recent passing of the anti-homosexuality bill by the country’s parliament.

Speaking with a local LGBTQ+ activist over the phone, Ranganathan learns about the fear and oppression faced by the gay community in Uganda. He is deeply upset by what he hears and expresses his sympathy for those affected by the law change. He condemns the homophobia that is empowered by the law and describes it as horrible and disgusting.

Initially, Ranganathan hoped to find some justification for the new laws and believed that they were not widely supported. However, after speaking to his guide Alex, he realizes that the law is not only well-supported but also celebrated in the country. This revelation further reinforces his disappointment and sadness.

Romesh Ranganathan’s emotional response to the situation in Uganda highlights the challenges faced by the gay community and their supporters. The clip from his series sheds light on the impact of the anti-gay laws and the need for continued advocacy and support for LGBTQ+ rights.

Uganda Passes Aggressive Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill with Death Penalty

In a shocking move, Uganda has passed a bill in 2023 that is being hailed as one of the world’s most aggressive pieces of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The bill imposes the death penalty for what it deems as ‘aggravated homosexuality’, a term that is loosely defined and includes engaging in gay sex while being HIV positive and seducing someone through ‘misrepresentation’. This legislation has sparked outrage and concern among human rights activists worldwide.

Under this new law, individuals in Uganda can also face up to 20 years in prison for ‘recruitment, promotion, and funding’ of same-sex ‘activities’. Even ‘attempted aggravated homosexuality’ can result in a 14-year sentence. This legislation is a major setback for LGBTQ+ rights in the country and has raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda.
