Richard Rankin, best known for his role in Outlander, is set to star in the latest TV adaptation of the Inspector Rebus novels. Written by Scottish author Ian Rankin, the book series has been a huge success, with the first novel released in 1987 and 23 more following since then. The novels, which revolve around Detective Inspector John Rebus and are mostly set in Edinburgh, account for a significant portion of crime book sales in the UK. The TV show, which originally aired in 2000 with John Hannah in the lead role, ran until 2007, and now it is making a comeback with Richard Rankin taking on the iconic character.

Born in Rutherglen, Scotland in 1983, Richard Harris, who later changed his name to Richard Rankin, had initially planned a career in the sciences or Information Technology. However, a chance encounter during a trip to Los Angeles changed his path. After being told by a film producer that he had the look of an actor, Rankin returned to Glasgow and auditioned for Langside College. To avoid confusion with Irish actor Richard Harris, he started using his mother’s maiden name.

Rankin’s acting career began with appearances on various TV shows, including VideoGaiden, Legit, The Old Guys, and Taggart, between 2006 and 2010. He then landed roles in The Crimson Field, Silent Witness, American Odyssey, The Syndicate, and From Darkness. However, it was his role as Roger Wakefield in Outlander that propelled his career to new heights. He first appeared in the season two finale in 2016 and continued to portray the character in several episodes of season three, where he played the love interest of Brianna Fraser. Rankin has also appeared in other popular TV series such as The Replacement, The Last Kingdom, Midsomer Murders, and Trust Me.
