MEGHAN MARKLE DEFENDED BY MELISSA MCCARTHY: “HATEFUL COMMENTS FROM WOMEN ARE DISAPPOINTING”
The internet has been a breeding ground for criticism of Meghan Markle ever since she became part of the royal family. But one Hollywood A-lister is coming to her defense. Melissa McCarthy, who briefly worked with Meghan in 2021, is disappointed to see that most of the hate directed at the Duchess of Sussex comes from other women. “It bums me out for every woman and every person, that for no reason people just like to attack,” McCarthy revealed in an interview with Page Six. Instead of tearing each other down, McCarthy believes in celebrating successful women. “I always think, how inspiring! I’ve never once been threatened by someone who is amazing,” she added. The hate, according to McCarthy, lies with the people who throw it.
Fans will remember McCarthy’s cameo in Meghan’s 40th birthday video for her 40×40 initiative. The two women shared adorable comedic banter, with McCarthy wearing a fascinator and gloves for her royal-inspired appearance. Meghan then explained her birthday mission, which involved asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to mentor women returning to the workforce. McCarthy praised Meghan for being “wonderful” and “awesome” to work with on the project.
Meghan herself has spoken out about the online bullying she has faced. During a panel at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, she revealed that she is keeping her distance from social media for her own well-being. She expressed her confusion over the hateful comments, describing them as cruel rather than just catty. Meghan also highlighted the astonishing fact that much of the hate comes from women targeting other women.
The Duchess of Sussex believes that for social media to be a safe space for everyone, “systemic change has to happen at the same time as the cultural change is happening.” According to her, the current situation is that we have forgotten about our humanity in the digital space and certain sectors of the media. It will be interesting to see how Meghan handles social media with the launch of American Riviera Orchard, as her presence will be crucial for the brand’s success. While moving forward with her beloved projects, she aims to maintain peace.
