The music world is mourning the loss of Sir Andrew Davis, who has sadly succumbed to leukaemia at the age of 80. Recognized for his exceptional talent, Sir Andrew had the privilege of performing with some of the world’s most esteemed orchestras. Notably, he led the Last Night of the Proms on twelve occasions, leaving an indelible mark on the prestigious event. Additionally, Sir Andrew held the distinction of being the longest-serving chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

His agent broke the news of his passing to BBC News, describing Sir Andrew’s life as remarkable, rich, and meaningful. The agent expressed confidence that his career would be celebrated for years to come. Following the announcement, tributes poured in on social media, with many expressing their condolences and honoring Sir Andrew’s musical legacy. Among those paying tribute was musician and conductor Julian Lloyd Webber, who fondly remembered a beautiful Delius Concerto in 2012 with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

The Royal Opera House also expressed their sadness at the loss of Sir Andrew Davis, acknowledging his contributions to the world of opera and symphonic music. Fellow conductor Michael Seal, who had the pleasure of interviewing Sir Andrew for his podcast, described him as a lovely person, both humble and warm. The current chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo, expressed her gratitude for Sir Andrew’s immense impact on music, always leading with distinction and kindness.
