KATE GARRAWAY OPENS UP ABOUT GRIEF AFTER HUSBAND’S DEATH

In a heart-wrenching revelation, Kate Garraway, the 57-year-old host of Good Morning Britain, has shared her ongoing grief following the loss of her husband, Derek Draper. Derek, a former author and psychologist, tragically passed away in January after a long battle with Covid-19. The couple’s journey was documented in the emotional ITV documentary ‘Derek’s Story’.

Throughout this difficult time, their children, Darcey, 18, and Billy, 14, have shown incredible strength. In fact, Darcey even took on the role of pallbearer at her father’s funeral. Despite returning to work shortly after the funeral, Kate has taken a break from her presenting duties to focus on her healing process.

In an interview with The Mirror, Kate expressed her excitement for the upcoming Prince’s Trust Awards, which she sees as a positive focus amidst her grief. “I’m very excited. It’s going to be a beautiful event, it always is. Everybody here is amazing,” she shared.

Kate acknowledged that she is still in the early stages of grief, just three months since Derek’s passing. She emphasized the importance of focusing on her children and engaging in activities she hasn’t been able to do before. “At the moment it’s all about keeping busy. I’m sure there will be a moment where I have to stop and deal with it. But at the moment I’m just keeping busy. Help is there. You just have to ask for it,” Kate said.

She also highlighted the significance of having support from others during difficult times. “Community is everything, whether it’s friends or colleagues, or your neighbors down your street. It keeps us going. It’s the structure that carries us through life,” she shared.

In addition to her emotional struggles, Kate has also faced financial challenges due to caring for Derek. She revealed that she had to withdraw funds from her pension earlier than planned to cover the mounting costs. “I have had to withdraw the bit you can tax-free from my pension to pay for belated bills for my husband, who has now passed away. People are having to do things – it wasn’t a huge pension in the first place – which aren’t what they saved for,” Kate confessed.

Despite the hardships she has faced, Kate remains resilient and determined to navigate through her grief. She is grateful for the support she has received and looks forward to brighter days ahead.
