The Lifeline team has raised an impressive amount of money for Young Lives vs Cancer, reaching nearly £20,000. Despite facing challenging weather conditions, the team remained determined to complete their walk in support of this important cause. As they hiked towards the beautiful Lulworth Cove in Dorset, dark clouds loomed overhead, initially mistaken for military activity. However, it soon became evident that a storm was on the horizon.

The intensity of the rain proved to be overwhelming, with many of the 2000-plus walkers describing it as a “biblical” event. Within minutes, paths transformed into streams, leaving clothes soaked through and walking boots drenched in muddy brown water. In a hurry, plastic bags were repurposed into phone holders, bag protectors, and even waterproof hats.

This unexpected storm caught everyone off guard, as the Met Office only issued a yellow weather warning at 10 am that day. Despite having already walked for 11 hours through rural Dorset, the group refused to let the weather deter them. Their determination to support this special cause remained unwavering, even in the face of challenging conditions.

As part of this year’s Lifeline campaign, the team aims to raise funds for Young Lives vs Cancer. This organization is dedicated to ensuring that every child and young person diagnosed with cancer receives the necessary care and support at the right time. So far, they have managed to raise an impressive £20,000, but donations are still welcome.

Prior to taking on this challenge, the team had the opportunity to speak with individuals who have been supported by the charity. Jasmin Sarll, a mother whose son Hugo was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer at the age of two, shared her experience of the daily struggle between paying rent and putting food on the table. Thanks to Young Lives vs Cancer, she received grants that helped her financially and allowed her to focus on her son’s treatment.

Another individual, Ainsley Foster, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 21 and temporarily lost his vision during treatment. He spent eight days in an induced coma. Throughout this difficult time, he found solace in his Young Lives vs Cancer support worker, Eve, who he described as a “second mum” for her unwavering support.

As we embarked on our challenge at Corfe Castle, we were filled with determination and a sense of purpose. Kat Tetley from Young Lives vs Cancer reminded us that every step we took would make a significant impact on the lives of children and young people battling cancer. With the inspiring music from the Greatest Showman playing in the background, we joined 3,000 other trekkers at the start line.

The hike began with gentle hills that gradually prepared us for the journey ahead. After reaching the 11km checkpoint, we replenished our energy with delicious fruits, custard pastries, and flapjacks. Our route took us through the charming town of Swanage, where we made a quick stop at the Surprise ‘N’ Store shop for a last-minute cap purchase. As we made our way back towards Corfe Castle, we couldn’t help but feel a renewed sense of determination.

Throughout the trek, we were uplifted by the support of strangers who noticed our Young Lives vs Cancer t-shirts. Children and their parents cheered us on from the beach, while a group of cyclists shouted words of encouragement as they passed us on the Priest’s Way trail. One particular moment stood out when a paediatric nurse expressed her gratitude for the charity’s work in her local hospital upon seeing our t-shirts.

The journey was not without its challenges, and we encountered a steep hill that we affectionately named ‘The Beast’. It tested our physical and mental strength, but we pushed through and conquered it.

NEWS REPORTER CONQUERS ‘THE BEAST’ FOR CHARITY WALK

News reporter Jen Mills celebrated a major achievement as she conquered the challenging ‘The Beast’ section of a charity walk. Joined by a group of determined walkers, they faced steep hills and unpredictable weather conditions along the way. Despite foot traffic jams and flooded roads, the team persevered, driven by their mission to raise funds for Young Lives vs Cancer.

At the 25km checkpoint, located near Church Knowle village, the walkers took a moment to rest and recharge. After a quick lunch and tending to blisters, they continued their journey towards the next checkpoint at 42km. A particularly steep hill, affectionately called ‘The Beast’, tested their endurance, but the stunning views of Lulworth Cove provided some respite.

As the thunderstorm hit later in the day, the team pushed forward towards their next rest stop at Daggers Gate. The challenging conditions forced organizers to offer emergency shuttles for some walkers, but a smaller group called Lifeline, armed with dry kit and borrowed head torches, decided to press on towards the finish line.

With darkness enveloping the surroundings, the walkers relied on glow sticks placed on fences and gates to guide them. The once beautiful views were replaced by eerie shadows of hillsides and coastlines. However, their determination to support children and young people with cancer and their families kept them going.

The atmosphere was electric as the speakers blared out the uplifting anthem, “The Only Way is Up.” The walkers were rewarded with a well-deserved feast, including hot food and prosecco, as well as heartfelt hugs and high fives.

The following day, as the participants rested their weary feet and tended to their blisters, they took a moment to reflect on their remarkable achievement. Not only had they accomplished a physically demanding feat, but they had also made a significant impact through their support of a charitable organization.

The charity walk had faced its fair share of challenges along the way, with unpredictable weather conditions and tough terrain.
