Born and raised in Edgware, London, Sonali’s parents emigrated from India. Growing up with her younger brother Amal, she attended Longfield First and Middle School, followed by Whitmore High School in Harrow.

After completing her degree in broadcast journalism at Nottingham Trent University, Sonali joined the BBC World Service as a producer in 2002. She quickly made her mark, presenting on The World Today and World Business Report.

But Sonali’s talents extend beyond presenting. She is also a trained dancer, with over a decade of training in Streetdance, Indian classical, and Indian folk dance. Reports suggest that at 43 years old, she still possesses impressive moves and occasionally showcases her skills on Instagram.

While Sonali prefers to keep her family life away from the public eye, she enjoys an idyllic existence with her husband Ardash Shah and their two children. Their daughter Ariana was born in 2013, followed by their son Rafi in 2016. In 2020, Sonali shared a heartwarming throwback photo of newborn Ariana on International Daughters Day, reminiscing about the joys of motherhood.
