Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has requested permission from King Charles to dissolve parliament for his first general election as monarch. The highly anticipated general election is set to take place on July 4.

With general elections being a major event on the TV calendar, broadcasters have started revealing their lineup for the night. In 2019, Huw Edwards led the 11-hour TV marathon, attracting a staggering 4.26 million viewers. However, since leaving the broadcaster, speculation has been rife about who will take his place. While no official confirmation has been made, Laura Kuenssberg and Clive Myrie are the frontrunners for the role.

Channel 4 has announced that Emily Maitlis will be the face of their general election coverage. The 53-year-old will host the special alongside news anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy. Krishnan expressed his excitement, stating, “I think this is going to be one of those rare election nights we remember for decades, so I hope viewers will enjoy spending it with us.” Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart will also provide their unique analysis throughout the night. Additionally, viewers can expect appearances from popular Gogglebox stars.

It’s still uncertain who will be hosting ITV’s election night coverage in July, but there’s a possibility that Tom Bradby could be leading the way. The 57-year-old was the face of ITV’s election night in 2019, which drew in 1.4 million viewers, making it the second most-watched broadcaster, just behind the BBC, as reported by MailOnline.

Back in 2015, viewers witnessed Tom Bradby being joined by Robert Peston and Allegra Stratton, while George Osborne and Ed Balls provided commentary from the studio. The upcoming UK general election is scheduled for July 4.
