England fans heading to Euro 2024 in Germany have received some unconventional advice from the local police. Instead of downing pints, the German police have encouraged fans to smoke cannabis. With around 40,000 Three Lions supporters expected to descend on Gelsenkirchen for England’s opening group stage game against Serbia, authorities are taking unprecedented security measures to prevent hooliganism. Offensive chants have already been discouraged, and the Veltins Arena will serve low alcohol beer. However, the local police have gone a step further, stating that smoking cannabis puts people in a chill mood and can help prevent violence.

Germany recently joined the list of countries that have legalized cannabis for personal use. A YouGov poll showed that the German public is divided on the new law, with 47 percent in favor and 42 percent against. Chief Inspector Christof Burghardt expressed concerns about the upcoming game, describing it as “high-risk” due to the history and presence of hooligans on both sides. He emphasized the challenge of identifying and separating violent groups from peaceful and law-abiding fans to ensure everyone’s safety.
