Emmanuel Petit Calls for Reece James to be Replaced as Chelsea Captain

Former Chelsea player Emmanuel Petit has urged the club’s next manager to consider replacing Reece James as the captain at Stamford Bridge. James, who came through the Chelsea academy, was named captain for the 2023-24 season but struggled with injuries, making just 11 appearances in all competitions. Petit believes that James’ lack of playing time over the past two seasons makes it illogical for him to continue as captain. Instead, Petit suggests that the armband should be given to Conor Gallagher, who stepped in as captain in James’ absence and made 39 appearances for Chelsea this season.

Chelsea’s search for a new manager continues after Mauricio Pochettino’s departure. The club’s owners had talks with Pochettino after the season ended, resulting in his agreement to leave. With the managerial position still vacant, Petit shared his thoughts on the captaincy situation. He stated, “We all know James is such a great player and we’re always crossing our fingers that he plays as much as possible. However, how much has he played in the last two years? It’s nowhere near enough. You cannot be the captain when you miss the majority of games.”

Petit draws a comparison to Abou Diaby’s situation at Arsenal, where injuries prevented him from being reliable. He believes that Gallagher, who consistently played and captained the team in James’ absence, should be given the captain’s armband. Petit describes Gallagher as a symbol on the pitch and someone who plays every game, making him a suitable candidate for the role.

James, who was not included in England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, expressed his gratitude to Pochettino following his departure from Chelsea. He posted on Instagram, thanking the former manager for believing in him and giving him responsibility. Despite the lack of playing time under Pochettino, James expressed his appreciation for the relationship they had.

Chelsea finished the season in sixth place but managed to secure qualification for European competition by winning their last five games. As the search for Pochettino’s replacement continues, Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, Brentford manager Thomas Frank, and Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca are among the leading contenders for the position.
