Elon Musk Faces Backlash from Twitch Streamers Over Viral Meme
Elon Musk, known for his controversial statements on video games, has once again found himself in hot water. This time, top Twitch streamers Ludwig and CohhCarnage are calling him out for being a hypocrite. It seems that whenever Musk talks about video games, his audience is left unimpressed. From claiming to be one of the best Quake players in the world to getting into a dispute with an Elden Ring streamer who beat the game using Morse code, Musk’s gaming credibility has been questioned.
Earlier this year, Musk expressed his desire to make Twitter a force in the livestreaming industry. He even livestreamed himself playing Diablo 4 multiple times on the platform. However, when he recently encouraged Twitch streamers to follow suit, he made a joke about the streaming site being filled with half-naked people instead of gamers. This only served to push the streamers away and label Musk as a hypocrite.
Musk’s tweet, featuring a meme from The Simpsons, shows Mr. Burns and Smithers approaching a bar. The caption suggests the possibility of video game streams, but the following image depicts the inside of a strip club. While Musk may have intended to highlight Twitch’s shift towards sexually suggestive content, the streamers themselves did not find it amusing.
Twitch streamer CohhCarnage called out Musk’s hypocrisy, pointing out that he was posting about sexual content on a platform that he believes should not have such content. Other popular streamers, including Ludwig, HasanAbi, and Alinity, also mocked Musk’s tweet. They highlighted the presence of sexually explicit content on both Twitch and Twitter, making it difficult for either platform to claim the moral high ground.
If Musk truly wants to attract talent from rival sites, streamers suggest that offering better cuts of subscriber fees and advertisement revenue would be a more effective strategy. As it stands, Musk’s attempt to engage with the Twitch community has backfired, leaving him facing criticism and accusations of hypocrisy.
