“Deadliest Catch” Star Nick Mavar Passes Away at 59

In a tragic turn of events, beloved “Deadliest Catch” star Nick Mavar has sadly passed away at the age of 59. The Croatia native experienced a sudden medical emergency while at a boatyard in Naknek, Alaska, according to Bristol Bay Police Chief Jeffrey Eldie. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Mavar succumbed to natural causes, leaving fans and loved ones devastated.

Mavar gained widespread recognition through his appearances on the popular Discovery Channel series, which showcases the grueling lives of commercial crab fishermen battling extreme working conditions. From 2005 to 2021, he captivated audiences with his unwavering determination and unwavering spirit. His contributions to the show extended beyond the original series, as he also starred in spinoffs like “Deadliest Catch: Siberian Winter” and “Deadliest Catch: The Bait.”

Tragically, Mavar’s departure from the show was marked by a life-threatening incident. During a December 2020 expedition, he suffered a ruptured appendix while onboard. This led to a legal battle between Mavar and boat owner Sig Hansen, as he claimed that there was a lack of proper medical care planning during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Hansen, in turn, filed a lawsuit against the show’s production company for the same reason, sparking a contentious dispute.

Mavar’s passing comes as another devastating blow to the “Deadliest Catch” community, as it follows the deaths of fellow cast members Nick McGlashan and Mahlon Reyes. McGlashan, who starred in the reality series from 2013 to 2020, passed away at the young age of 33. Just a few months prior, Reyes, a deckhand on the show, tragically died of a heart attack at 38 years old. The coroner’s report revealed that his death was an accident resulting from acute cocaine intoxication.

As fans mourn the loss of yet another beloved member of the “Deadliest Catch” family, our thoughts and condolences go out to Mavar’s wife, Julie Mavar, and all those who were touched by his incredible spirit and unwavering dedication. His legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who admired him.
