An Antiques Roadshow guest couldn’t contain his laughter when he found out the jaw-dropping value of a gift he received from Hollywood star Brooke Shields. The popular PBS series is known for showcasing glamorous Hollywood items, and expert Steven Porterfield was thrilled to see what his next guest had brought in. It turned out to be a beaded gown designed by Bob Mackie specifically for Brooke Shields in the 1980s. The guest, who happened to be a hairdresser, shared the story behind the gown, revealing that he received it as a surprise from Shields herself during their time working together on the Broadway production of Grease.

According to the guest, on the last night of Shields’ performance, he showed up dressed in the gown and presented her with a bouquet of white flowers. To his surprise, she autographed the dress for him. Weeks later, he had the opportunity to meet designer Bob Mackie at a benefit event, where he also autographed the dress and gave the guest a sketch of the gown. The guest even had a picture of himself alongside Shields wearing the dress.

Describing Shields, the guest praised her as one of the most charming and professional people he has ever worked with. He mentioned her dedication to constantly improving herself and her craft. Porterfield, the expert, commented on Mackie’s legendary status in the industry, having designed for iconic figures like Cher, Dolly Parton, and The Carol Burnett Show. He emphasized the significance of the dress, which not only bears Mackie’s label and signature but also Shields’ autograph, placed daringly in the bosom area.

Antiques Roadshow has a history of surprising Brits with valuable items that were gathering dust in their attics. From a priceless Faberge flower to artwork by Banksy, the BBC show has uncovered some of the most expensive antiques ever seen.

Ink Pen Fades, but Bob Mackie Gown Still Valuable

In a surprising turn of events, the ink pen used to sign a Bob Mackie gown has faded, but that hasn’t diminished its value. Antiques Roadshow expert Brooke Porterfield assured the guest that the gown still holds significant worth.

Porterfield explained that a Bob Mackie gown typically sells for $1,000 to $1,500 (£785 to £1,177) on the secondary market. However, this particular gown is unique due to the signatures from both Brooke and Bob Mackie, as well as a beautiful illustration. Together, these elements create a remarkable piece of fashion history.

With all these factors considered, Porterfield estimated that the gown could fetch around $7,500 (£5,888) at auction. The guest couldn’t help but laugh at the appraisal, expressing gratitude for such an incredible gift.

Porterfield playfully remarked, “Isn’t that a great gift?” to which the guest replied, “That’s the best gift ever, thanks Brooke.”
