ALERT: Thunderstorms and Hail to Hit UK Today!

Hold onto your umbrellas, folks! The Met Office has just issued a yellow thunderstorm warning, reminding us that winter is still lingering in the middle of June. Brace yourselves for slow-moving thunderstorms and heavy showers that will last well into the evening. And if that wasn’t enough, hail has also been forecasted. Welcome to Britain, where the weather never fails to surprise us.

According to the Met Office, the heaviest showers and thunderstorms could unleash a whopping 20 mm of rain in less than an hour, with some areas experiencing a staggering 30-40 mm in just 2-3 hours. That’s a whole lot of rain! So, make sure you’re prepared for a wet and wild day.

The yellow warning is in effect for most of today, covering various regions across the UK. In Central, Tayside & Fife, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, Fife, Perth and Kinross, and Stirling, be prepared for thunderstorms to roll in. In North East England, areas such as Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, and Sunderland should also brace for stormy weather.

In North West England, Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and other surrounding areas should be on high alert. Meanwhile, in SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian Council, Scottish Borders, West Lothian, Strathclyde, Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, and West Dunbartonshire, thunderstorms are also expected. Last but not least, Yorkshire & Humber, including East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, and York, should prepare for stormy conditions as well.

While not every area will experience a thunderstorm, those that do can expect slow-moving storms accompanied by lightning, hail, and heavy rain. This could lead to potential floods, travel delays, power outages, and even damage to buildings from lightning strikes. Stay safe by checking road conditions before heading out and keeping an eye on train and bus timetables. And don’t forget to have your mobile phone power banks, batteries, and torches nearby in case of any blackouts.

So, grab your raincoats and stay prepared, because today’s weather is sure to make a splash.
