BRIDGERTON BOOSTS UK ECONOMY BY £250M AND SUPPORTS THOUSANDS OF BUSINESSES

The hit Netflix series Bridgerton has not only captivated audiences with its regal romances, but it has also made a significant impact on the UK economy. According to Netflix and Shondaland, the show, along with its spin-off Queen Charlotte, has contributed over a quarter of a billion pounds to the nation. Since its premiere in December 2020, Bridgerton has also provided a boost to nearly 5,000 local businesses.

To celebrate this milestone, Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the show, visited London on Friday to open markets for trading at the London Stock Exchange. Speaking about the success of Bridgerton, Rhimes said, “The Bridgerton universe occupies a special space in culture, resonating with young and old alike, creating conversation, starting trends and influencing everything from baby names to weddings. The shows have also had a seismic impact on the UK economy, boosting it by a quarter of a billion pounds over the last five years and supporting thousands of jobs and businesses. It is clear that the business of art and culture can make a huge economic contribution to local communities. I could not be prouder.”

The show has not only boosted viewership but has also led to an increase in tourism to the areas where it is set, such as Bath and Bristol. Additionally, it has had a significant influence on baby names, with a 51% increase in babies named Daphne, a 27% increase in the name Eloise, and a 26% increase in the name Colin since its premiere.

Julia Hoggett, the CEO of the London Stock Exchange, commented on the cultural and economic impact of the creative industries, stating, “Our film and creative industries bring enormous benefits to the U.K. economy, creating jobs, driving innovation and building communities, and we are thrilled to celebrate the significant economic and cultural impact of their work.”
